Your first day on an ankle monitor: what to expect

If you or someone you love has been ordered onto an ankle monitor, the first day can feel like a lot. It doesn't have to. Here's exactly what happens at intake, and what the first week looks like after you leave the office.

At the office

Living with it

The device is low-profile and sits close to the ankle, so it fits under most pants and socks. It's rated IP68, which means showers and rain are fine, along with brief submersion of up to 30 seconds at shallow depth. Skip hot tubs, saunas, and long swims.

Charging is the one new habit. The battery lasts about 5 days under normal use, and the clip-on charger tops it up in roughly 2 hours while you keep wearing the device. Most people pick a routine, like charging while they watch TV in the evening. If the battery gets low, both you and the monitoring center are alerted well before it runs out.

What not to do

Cutting or stretching the strap, forcing the clasp, or opening the housing all trigger an immediate tamper alert to the monitoring center and your officer. If the device is damaged by accident, or something feels wrong, call the monitoring center right away. They're staffed 24/7 and will coordinate a repair or replacement. Reporting it quickly protects you.

Most first-day nerves fade once you see how it works. The biggest change for most people is simply remembering to charge it.

Travel and schedule changes

Driving within your approved area and schedule is generally fine. Travel outside your approved zones needs prior authorization from your officer or case manager. Ask before you go, not after, and changes can usually be made in the platform the same day.
